How do I choose a care home?

When choosing a care home it is usually helpful to speak to a number of people including:

  • Your friends and relatives who may have loved ones in care already
  • your GP
  • your local Social Services Department who will be able to provide you with a list of the registered Homes in your area
  • the Registered Nursing Home Association (Tel :0121 454 2511) who will supply a list of registered nursing homes
  • the Elderly Accommodation Counsel, Third Floor, 89 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7PT. Tel : 020 7820 1343. Email : info@eac.org.uk

You may also find it useful to look at the Inspection Reports for those individual Homes which make your short list. These are produced independently by the following organisations:

  • The Commission for Social Care Inspection (for Care Homes based in England) – www.csci.org.uk
  • The Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (for Care Homes based in Wales) – www.csiw.wales.gov.uk
  • The Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (for Care Homes based in Scotland) – www.carecommission.com
