The primary purpose of palliative care is to provide relief from pain or other distressing symptoms. These may arise from the side effects of a powerful treatment, such as chemotherapy or a life threatening condition. Palliative care comprises a team strategy that offers a support system for the resident, family and friends alike both during and after the illness.
It may be provided alongside treatments such as radiotherapy or investigations carried out to help to manage distressing clinical complications. As ever, residents will be supported to help them to live as actively as circumstances allow.
